It is one of the best kept beauty secrets dating back to the Ancient Egyptians. Seriously, Cleopatra was probably all about this stuff. This simple product can make your life easier, keep your wallet happier, and make you as pretty as a peach. Up until now, chances are that all you’ve ever used it for is making cookies and cleaning out a stinky fridge.
Leavening – While there are some yeast leavened cakes, they are not that common so I will stick with baking powder and baking soda. Too much can cause your cake to fall or crumble or fall apart so follow the recipe carefully. If you omit one egg in a recipe increase the amount of baking powder by 1/2 teaspoon. If using baking soda you should use an acid such as buttermilk or cream using 1/2 baking soda for each cup.
Measuring cups. There are different measuring cups for dry and liquid ingredients. Using a dry measure is recommended over a measuring cup for wet ingredients when measuring flour and sugars. A wet measure is usually the glass types with demarcations to indicate amounts while the dry measures are usually plastic or metal and are meant to be filled up and leveled off. Measuring spoons can be used for both liquid and dry.
After the 25 minutes are up, your hands will be a little pruney – this is totally normal. Just dry them off with a towel. Don’t wash them off with soap and water if possible. You want to retain the residue of baking soda on your skin. Some people say they have a light powerdy look to the skin after drying them off. The more residue of the solution, the better your results will be.
Another important benefit of measuring ingredients by weight is that you will be able to read bread formulas easily and understand if it is properly designed before doing anything. You can’t do this with volume measurements. It just doesn’t work. This is the key to being able to add any ingredient you want to your bread, be it an ancient grain, sunflower seeds, nuts, sugar, oil etc., and knowing it will work. You will be creating great bread and eliminating a significant amount of guess work.
Second, you need to look at your competition. Who else is serving your target market’s needs? What are they charging? Is your target market satisfied with their product choices? Third, you need to pay attention to pricing. You will need to look at the competition and determine whether the prices you want to charge are reasonable.
You can’t use it as an intimate feminine douche. In fact, you probably shouldn’t douche at all, as this flushes out the good bacteria and makes you more prone to yeast infections. If you really feel like you ought to douche, then make the douche mildly acidic by using dilute lemon juice or vinegar. If you get a yeast infection as a result – or from some other cause – apply live yoghurt internally in both directions (i.e. eat it and apply it within the vulva).
Thankfully, I love to experiment with food so leaving my old ways of baking behind isn’t too painful. I could buy a bunch of cookbooks and follow someone else’s recipes, but where’s the creativity in that? I’ll post recipes on my website as I get them written down. In the meantime, here’s to baking without guilt!
